Background of the Study

As universities evolve into smart campuses, integrating internet-of-things (IoT) devices, cloud computing, and AI technologies, they face new challenges in securing their networks. Smart universities provide connected environments where students, faculty, and staff interact seamlessly with digital resources. However, this increased interconnectivity brings heightened security risks such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and device vulnerabilities (Wang et al., 2023).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool in addressing these security challenges. AI-powered systems can automate threat detection, analyze large volumes of network data, and adapt to evolving attack patterns, offering more efficient protection than traditional methods (Abubakar et al., 2024). Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, has begun exploring the integration of AI in its network security architecture to safeguard its smart university systems. This study aims to enhance network security by incorporating AI-driven techniques, focusing on real-time anomaly detection, intelligent threat response, and automated security management.

Statement of the Problem

The rapid transformation into a smart campus at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, has exposed the university to complex cybersecurity challenges. Despite the adoption of conventional security measures, the growing number of connected devices and systems has made it difficult to monitor and secure the network effectively. This study investigates how AI can enhance the university’s network security and mitigate the risks posed by these advanced digital threats.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore AI-driven techniques for improving network security at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI in identifying and responding to network anomalies and attacks.

  3. To propose a comprehensive AI-based framework for securing the university’s smart campus network.

Research Questions

  1. How can AI be integrated into the network security infrastructure of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, to enhance its defense capabilities?

  2. What AI techniques are most effective in detecting network anomalies and potential security breaches in a smart university environment?

  3. How can AI-driven security systems contribute to the university's overall cybersecurity strategy?

Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the enhancement of cybersecurity practices at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma, by demonstrating how AI can strengthen the security of its smart campus network. The proposed AI-based security solutions will offer a proactive approach to threat detection and response, thus improving the overall security posture of the university.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to exploring AI-based solutions for network security at Federal University, Dutsin-Ma. It does not extend to the evaluation of other aspects of the smart campus infrastructure, such as IoT device security or cloud security.

Definitions of Terms

  • Smart University: A campus environment where digital technologies, IoT devices, and cloud services are integrated to enhance educational and administrative functions.

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): The simulation of human intelligence in machines that are capable of performing tasks that typically require human cognition, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

  • Anomaly Detection: The process of identifying patterns in data that do not conform to expected behavior, often used to detect security threats.
